Polbeth & West Calder Community Garden Visit

On Wednesday 21st August we attended a meeting of WLCAN (West Lothian Climate Action Network) at Polbeth.

As part of the meeting we had a guided tour of the growing areas which was conducted by the facility manager Amy.

In the community garden there are two large poly tunnels which grow a variety of vegetables, herbs flowers and plants.

The plants are sold throughout the year. The also have extensive outdoor beds growing a variety of vegetables and herbs as well as a fruit growing area with different types of fruit trees and bushes.

The Community Gardens try and use sustainable methods of cultivation, gathering rain water for the irrigation system, making their own compost and using solar power.

The community woodland offers  visitors a chance to explore and learn about the various plants and trees along several trails and members of the public are encouraged to use the picnic area.

Hopefully we can utilise the same methods as we develop our community garden at Carmondean.
